John Evans

I graduated from Stanford in 1967 and immediately joined the Peace Corps as a Volunteer in the Domnican Republic from 67-69. From 69-71 I was a graduate student at Tulane in Latin american Studies, receiving my Masters degree in early 71. At that point, I went into public service, working for the federal government in three agencies from 71 to 04: Labor Department (job training/job development 71-82); Peace Corps (PTO in Honduras 82-87, then Chief of Operations Inter America 87-90); finally INS as a Branch Chief in the national Asylum program). Public service was all I ever wanted to do, in direct response to President Kennedy's clarion call in his inauguration speech in 1961. I was one of 12 incorporators of Friends of the DR and have served on the Board and as Treasurer since day one in 1998. Since the mid-90s, I have also been a Board member of Fondo Quisqueya, a small, sister non-profit comprised of former Volunteers and staff who served in the DR. I am a fluent Spanish-speaker and serve as a volunteer translator for Just Neighbors, a small legal services charity serving low income immigants in Northern Virginia. In addition to my 10 year association with Peace Corps, my wife was a Volunteer in Honduras (66-68), and my younger daughters was a Volunteer in Ghana (98-00), so we are indeed a Peace Corps family. My older daughter and three grandkids have been living for four years in Albania where her husband is the Country Rep for the IMF, so there is a strong streak of development activity in our family. I am not active in RPCV/W but I am happy to be a supporting member.
